UCLA research on cognitive decline yields notable results

02/15/12

New brain imaging techniques from the University of California, Los Angeles can help predict who will suffer cognitive decline over time.

According to a report in the February issue of Archives of Neurology, UCLA scientists previously developed a brain-imaging tool to assess neurological changes, and they now can use that technique to track and predict cognitive decline over a two-year period.

"We are finding that this may be a useful neuro-imaging marker that can detect changes early, before symptoms appear, and it may be helpful in tracking changes in the brain over time," said Dr. Gary Small, study author, UCLA's Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging and a professor of psychiatry at the university's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.

Cognitive decline can begin early in life and could be an early indicator of Alzheimer's disease. An individual faces serious health threats as they grow older, which is why all adults should purchase a life insurance policy at a young age when rates and risk are relatively low. The policy can mature over time and help dependents of the policyholder.
