The potential health benefits of laughter

08/09/11

As people age, they may already have one of the best tools for maintaining physical and mental health at their disposal. A recent Times and Democrat article highlights the role laughter plays in the well-being of humans.

"Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health, says Dr. Paul E. McGhee.

Reverend James McGee, CEO of a senior living community, notes that he has "been very aware of the seemingly improved aging of those who laugh often and enjoy the humor they see in everyday life. Those who embrace and enjoy humor are generally physically, emotionally and spiritually more healthy and vital … those who laugh just seem to age better."

People who take a positive attitude toward difficult situations in life seem to recover quicker, according to the article. Laughter helps reduce stress hormones, boost immunity, relax muscles and decrease the risk of heart disease. The article notes that seniors with a good sense of humor tend to be much more social and have an overall improved mood.

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that people without heart disease were 40 percent more likely to laugh in a specific situation compared to those with heart disease. Having life insurance is still a good idea, even for those with great senses of humor.
