The limit of public transportation may be putting seniors at risk

06/16/11

Seniors that live in communities with public transportation may be better off than those in the suburbs. More than 15.5 million Americans over the age of 65 will live in communities with poor or non-existent public transportation by 2015, according to Transportation for America.

A continued number of baby boomers are choosing to age in place in the suburbs and this problem is expected to continue to grow as more than 77 million Americans begin to reach retirement age this year.

"The baby boom generation grew up and reared their own children in communities that, for the first time in human history, were built on the assumption that everyone would be able to drive an automobile," said John Robert Smith, president and CEO of Reconnecting America and co-chair of Transportation for America.

If people are unable to get to doctors appointments or the pharmacy they could be putting their lives at risk. If people are knowingly living in danger this could cause life insurance rates to rise.

However, some experts believe that these results may serve as a wake-up call and allow communities the opportunity to improve public transportation and retrofit streets to be safer for walking.
