A new study from the New York University Langone Medical Center reveals that certain cholesterol-lowering medications can accelerate the depletion of plaque in arteries.
Published online by the PLoS One journal on December 6, the study results show that drugs known as statins promote the breakdown of plaque in arteries, which can lead to strokes and other serious health complications if not treated early.
"Our new research shows statins actually promote the regression of atherosclerosis by altering the expression of a specific cell surface receptor within plaque cells," says Edward Fisher, co-author of the study. "This molecular phenomenon helps dissolve plaque by expelling coronary artery disease-causing cells from the plaque lining the arteries."
