Study released on effective drug treatment for lung cancer

01/19/12

A new study that may benefit senior citizens and others suffering from lung cancer identifies a drug, gefitinib, that may be more effective in treating non-small cell lung cancer if it is combined with agents that block certain micro RNAs.

Published in Nature Medicine, the study was led by investigators with the Ohio State University Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The researchers determined what causes cancers to develop a resistance to gefitinib and how to mitigate this resistance by blocking micro RNAs.

“Our findings suggest that gefitinib resistance that is caused by MET overexpression is at least partly due to miRNA deregulation,” said Dr. Carlo Croce, principal investigator director of Ohio State’s Human Cancer Genetics program and a member of the OSUCCC–James Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics program.

Although cancer can affect individuals from all age groups, certain types of cancer, including lung cancer, are most common among baby boomers, senior citizens and other members of older age groups. Before serious illness and disease can set in, it is strongly encouraged that adults from all walks of life who have dependents have a life insurance policy in place. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective method to paying less.
