Study released on defensive medicine costs

02/10/12

A recent study released by the Vanderbilt University Medical Center reveals the high costs associated with defensive medicine with orthopedic surgeons spending close to $2 billion each year on it.

The practice of ordering additional but often unnecessary tests and diagnostic procedures in order to prevent a potential malpractice accusation, defensive medicine is costing more but not adding any real benefits to the patients' care.

"Currently, our nation's expenditure on health care is 20 percent of GDP [gross domestic product]. This figure really bothers us and served as motivation to conduct this survey," said Manish Sethi, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation and lead author of the study. "If defensive medicine can be curbed, we will see a dramatic reduction in health care costs, and our research makes this case."

Increased medical attention and doctor's visits happen with old age. In addition to a solid health insurance policy in place, anyone with a dependents should also have a life insurance policy in place before old age and ill health affects them. Comparing life insurance quotes online is a proven aid in securing low-cost coverage.
