Study released on Alzheimer's disease and brain-stimulating activities

01/24/12

Research conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, has led to yet another reason for individuals to read a book or finish a puzzle, as it could lead to cognitive benefits long into life.

Brain scans reinforced the belief that individuals with no symptoms of Alzheimer's disease who engaged in cognitively engaging activities throughout the course of their lifetime had fewer deposits of a destructive protein that can lead to the disease.

"These findings point to a new way of thinking about how cognitive engagement throughout life affects the brain," said Dr. William Jagust, principal investigator of the study. "Rather than simply providing resistance to Alzheimer's, brain-stimulating activities may affect a primary pathological process in the disease. This suggests that cognitive therapies could have significant disease-modifying treatment benefits if applied early enough, before symptoms appear."

Alzheimer's disease is a common affliction in the elderly, with early warning signs manifesting themselves previously. It is advised that young adults already have a life insurance policy in place in order to pay the least amount possible for coverage while they're still in good health. Comparing life insurance quotes online can yield these favorable results.
