Study: High blood sugar levels can lead to colorectal cancer in women

11/30/11

The results of a new study revealed that high blood sugar levels in older women can lead to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

Led by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, the study observed nearly 5,000 postmenopausal women and appeared in the November 29 edition of the British Journal of Cancer.

The American Cancer Society lists colorectal cancer as the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and third highest cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States.

"The next challenge is to find the mechanism by which chronically elevated blood glucose levels may lead to colorectal cancer," said Geoffrey Kabat, a senior epidemiologist at Einstein and lead author of the paper. “It’s possible that elevated glucose levels are linked to increased blood levels of growth factors and inflammatory factors that spur the growth of intestinal polyps, some of which later develop into cancer.”

It is important for baby boomers and senior citizens alike to adopt practices to lower blood pressure and promote heart health, as medical complications can arise as old age sets in. A clean bill of health can go a long way in obtaining an affordable life insurance policy for the financial safety of the policyholder's dependents and loved ones.
