Study could lead to better management, prevention of delirium in seniors

11/21/11

Delirium is a medical condition that affects roughly 7 million hospitalized Americans, but many of the clues that enable prevention and management of the disorder are being ignored, according to a recent study.

The study, from the Regenstrief Institute and the Indiana University School of Medicine, revealed that clinicians and researchers are not routinely using the chemical indicators linked to delirium to properly diagnose patients that are suffering from the ailment.

"These biomarkers linked to delirium provide us with a window to the disease process," said Babar Ali Khan, leader of the study and assistant professor of medicine at the IU School of Medicine. "With a clearer understanding of underlying mechanisms we can do a better job at recognizing and managing delirium and ultimately of developing therapies."

Delirium can lead to a decreased life span in the elderly, which is why all senior citizens, regardless of medical condition, should have a life insurance policy in place in that event that delirium or some other medical condition afflicts them. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective way to find the right policy at an affordable price.
