Studies could lead to improved treatment for serious diseases

01/10/12

Two related studies from Northwestern University reveal new insights into battling Alzheimer's disease, as well as other debilitating diseases suffered by senior citizens everywhere.

The research resulted in new strategies that can be used for tackling the challenges of preventing and treating Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases as well as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cancer, cystic fibrosis and type 2 diabetes.

The studies identified promising genes and small molecules that can be used against the diseases. The genes can help keep cells healthy and even restore health to damaged cells, which would provide new targets for developing effective drugs.

"These discoveries are exciting because we have identified genes that keep us healthy and small molecules that keep us healthy," said Richard Morimoto, lead researcher. "Future research should explain how these two important areas interact."

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are just a few of the common medical conditions affecting senior citizens on a widespread level. Those who are on the verge of old age will want to be sure their loved ones are financially covered in the event of anything catastrophic. This is why a life insurance policy should be in place before old age and poor health set in.
