Research studies effects of aging on the brain

10/11/11

Biologist research conducted at the Hull York Medical School and the University of York found new information related to the brain and how it is affected by old age.

Joined by scientists at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, the biologists discovered that stressful conditions can trigger high energy forms of harmful oxygen leading to synapses to grow excessively and potentially cause dysfunction.

"Neuronal contacts in the brain are constantly changing," said study co-author Dr. Iain Robinson. "These changes in the brain enable us to form short term memories such as where we parked the car, or longer term memories, such as what is our pin number for the cash point machine."

The stresses can occur during neurodegenerative disease common among senior citizens including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Old age and health issues generally go hand in hand but that doesn't mean senior citizens should be neglected life insurance coverage in the event they need it. Anyone, regardless of age, who has dependents that rely on their financial contributions, should have a life insurance policy in place. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective way to find an affordable rate on the right policy.
