Research released on dementia and hospitalizations

01/11/12

New research published in the January 11 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that individuals with dementia may benefit if hospitalizations can be prevented.

Those who developed dementia had a significantly higher rate of hospital admissions for all causes compared to those without dementia, the research found. The report also stated that proactive preventive care could have eliminated the need for hospitalization in some cases.

"Among older persons without dementia, hospitalization for serious illness is associated with subsequent cognitive decline," wrote Elizabeth Phelan, study author. "Identifying conditions that precipitate hospitalization of elderly individuals with dementia could focus clinical priorities on secondary and tertiary prevention in the outpatient setting and improve health care for this vulnerable and increasing population."

Dementia is a common affliction among the elderly, with early warning signs of the condition manifesting at even earlier ages. That is why it is important for anyone with dependents to purchase a life insurance policy as soon as possible. The younger the policyholder, the lower the cost of the policy, in some situations. Comparing life insurance quotes online will give any individual a good idea of how much coverage will cost them.
