New University of Georgia research reveals new information on Alzheimer's

11/09/11

Research conducted recently at the University of Georgia has led to the development of a mouse model that could lead to important revelations about Alzheimer's disease.

Hirano bodies- tiny objects found in the nerve cells of those suffering from Alzheimer's and other diseases- have been discovered by a cellular biologist at the University of Georgia to play a protective role in the progression of various neurodegenerative diseases.

"This work gives us a first view of the possible effects of Hirano bodies," said Marcus Fechheimer, Josiah Meigs professor of cellular biology at UGA. "Now we know that Hirano bodies do not kill cells and are not toxic to mice. This new model will allow us to ask whether Hirano bodies have any effect on progression of disease in the brain."

Alzheimer's is typically experienced by senior citizens and older baby boomers. Because Alzheimer's and similar diseases can't be prevented in many cases, those who are getting older will want to make sure they have the right life insurance policy in place for an uncertain future. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective way to locate the right policy at an affordable rate.
