New study suggests increase in elderly cancer survivors over next decade

10/07/11

A new study published in the October issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal by the American Association for Cancer Research, finds that the population of cancer survivors over 65 will increase significantly by roughly 42 percent during the next 10 years.

"We can expect a dramatic increase in the number of older adults who are diagnosed with or carry a history of cancer," said Julia Rowland, director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship at the National Cancer Institute. "Cancer is largely a disease of aging, so we're seeing yet another effect of the baby boom generation and we need to prepare for this increase."

Roughly 60 percent of cancer survivors in 2009 were at least 65 years old, but the NCI projects that number will increase to 63 percent by 2020.

Senior citizens have to start thinking about the financial security of their dependents and loved ones as they grow older. A life insurance policy is key in certain situations, and with a number of different providers offering coverage exclusive to individuals 65 and older, there is a policy out there for senior citizens if they know where to look.
