New study sheds light on mental performance decline

10/25/11

A recent study conducted by investigators at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System recently discovered a gene variation that can predict the rate of mental performance decline caused by age.

Researchers studied the skill set of experienced airline pilots that revealed one version of a single gene versus the other version of the same gene doubled the rate in which the subject's performance declined over time.

"This gene-associated difference may apply not only to pilots but also to the general public, for example in the ability to operate complex machinery," said Ahmad Salehi, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University.

Alzheimer's disease is a common ailment spurred by decline in mental performance and is usually experienced by individuals as they grow older in age. Old age is also synonymous with other health issues that should be addressed right away.Regardless of health, people in need of a life insurance policy for the financial security of their loved ones will want to consider term life coverage because it does not require a clean bill of health for approval.
