New study lists age as significant factor in prostate cancer fatalities

10/21/11

A recent study conducted at the University of Rochester reveals that men 75 and older typically pass away from late-stage and more aggressive prostate cancer more often than younger men.

The benefits from prostate cancer screening were recently called into question by a health panel that stated men 50 and older should forego routine testing for the disease because screening tests for prostate cancer do little to save lives and can lead to further suffering in some cases.

“We hope our study will raise awareness of the fact that older men are actually dying at high rates from prostate cancer,” said Guan Wu, lead author of the study. “With an aging population it is important to understand this, as doctors and patients will be embarking on more discussions about the pros and cons of treatment.”

Regardless of the effectiveness of treatment for prostate cancer, senior citizens are at a higher risk of contracting deadly diseases as they grow older leading many to consider the financial situation of themselves and their families. A life insurance policy can go a long way in securing the necessary finances for a family to move on after the loss of a loved one.
