New study links stroke risk to memory loss risk

11/09/11

A new study from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke research group found a potential connection between a person's stroke risk and their risk of developing memory problems.

The research, published in the November 8 issue of Neurology, a medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, revealed that a person's stroke risk profile may be a helpful indicator of their likelihood of developing memory and thinking problems later in life.

"Our findings suggest that elevated blood pressure and thickening of the heart muscle may provide a simple way for doctors to identify people at risk for memory and thinking problems," said Frederick Unverzagt, study author. "Increased focus on preventing and treating high blood pressure may be needed to preserve cognitive health."

A stroke risk profile includes an individual's smoking habits, diabetes status and high blood pressure. These indicators can all be impacted by lifestyle choices, and unhealthy lifestyle choices should be avoided if an individual wants to find the lowest cost life insurance policy available. There are a number of different options available in the life insurance world but anyone with dependents would be wise to purchase some form of coverage.
