A study published recently in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, revealed that age and body mass index can be significant risk factors leading to gestational diabetes mellitus.
The research found a link between maternal age, BMI and the development of GDM, particularly among Black African and South Asian women.
"Gestational diabetes complicates 3 to 5 percent of pregnancies," said Dr. Makrina Savvidou, co-author of the paper. "Currently in the UK, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends a diagnostic test for gestational diabetes in women with traditional risk factors, such as increased body mass index, family or previous personal history of gestational diabetes, delivery of a large baby and racial origin with a high prevalence of diabetes."
