New study examines high surgical costs for congenital heart patients

10/19/11

A recent study published in Circulation: Quality and Outcomes, a journal from the American Heart Association, revealed that higher surgical costs related to congenital heart patients is directly related to higher rates of inpatient deaths.

The survey found that there were lower death rates associated with surgical admissions that incurred lower costs, with the number of adults undergoing congenital heart surgery in pediatric hospitals rising.

"The most interesting and actionable of our findings was that depression is a risk factor for high resource use among this surgical population," said Oscar Benavidez, lead author of the study. "While we cannot change a patient's surgery complexity or presence of DiGeorge syndrome, we might be able to implement a treatment strategy for a potentially modifiable risk factor such as depression."

Heart issues plague senior citizens at a high rate, but the technology and medical advancements exist to create a high rate of survival. Still, senior citizens experiencing health issues who do not have a life insurance policy in place may be able to provide for their surviving dependents by purchasing coverage.
