Alzheimer's patients may have some new ammunition with which to fight their disease, as researchers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute recently developed a new method to design antibodies engineered to combat the ailment.
The Troy, New York-based institute innovated the notably simple process, which involves creating antibodies that neutralize the harmful protein particles that can lead to Alzheimer's. The development was reported in the December 5 early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"We are actually exploiting the same protein interactions that cause the disease in the brain to mediate binding of antibodies to toxic Alzheimer's protein particles," said Peter Tessier, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering.
Alzheimer's disease is a common affliction among senior citizens, though some cases develop before old age. When it comes to life insurance coverage, consumers are strongly encouraged to purchase a policy at an early age and while in good health, as many insurance providers base coverage rates on the age and health of the policyholder.
