New research unveils positive signs in Alzheimer's patients following cataract surgery

10/26/11

A recent breakthrough in Alzheimer's research finds that cognition, mood and sleep patterns can improve in its patients following cataract surgery.

The full details are expected to be disclosed at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's 2011 Annual Meeting on October 25, but initial findings indicate that improved vision following cataract surgery can lead to an Alzheimer's patient's improvement in other behavioral areas.

"We wanted to learn whether significant vision improvement would result in positive mood and behavior changes, or might instead upset these patients' fragile coping strategies," said Dr. Brigitte Girard, lead researcher. "In future studies we intend to learn what factors, specifically, led to the positive effects we found, so that we can boost the quality of life for Alzheimer's patients, their families and caregivers."

Alzheimer's disease usually affects older individuals, and although research has unveiled new methods in improving the lives of those afflicted by it, the disease is still dangerous. Senior citizens should not only be aware of the health conditions that can affect them in old age but also their life insurance options in order to secure financial protection for their loved ones.
