Research conducted recently at Loma Linda University in California revealed that a vegetarian diet complete with exercise and other healthy lifestyle choices could protect against diabetes in the African American population.
African Americans - who are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic whites - could significantly lower their risk by adopting a variety of healthy lifestyle choices, according to the report, which was published in the October issue of Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases.
"These findings are encouraging for preventing type 2 diabetes in the black population, which is more susceptible to the disease than other populations," said Serena Tonstad, a professor at Loma Linda University and lead author of the report. "A vegetarian diet may be a way to counteract the increased diabetes risk for the black population."
Maintaining good health is an important goal for all age groups and ethnicities, as it not only promotes longevity but also low life insurance rates. A life insurance policy is essential for anyone who is concerned about their family's financial well-being moving toward an uncertain future.
