New research reveals memory boosting alternatives

12/12/11

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine recently unveiled new findings that show inhibition of a brain molecule known as PKR could improve memory and cognitive function.

The research, reported in a recent article in the journal Cell, used mice to illustrate the molecule PKR's potential to boost memory. PKR levels are normally elevated during viral infections, but the researchers found its function seems to be linked to memory as well as to sensing infections. By developing a new drug, researchers hope the discovery can lead to a pill that improves memory performance.

"These data are totally unexpected, and show that two molecules classically known to play a role in viral infection and the immune response regulate the kind of brain activity that leads to the formation of long-term memory in the adult brain," said Dr. Mauro Costa-Mattioli, author of the paper.

Memory is an important aspect of any individual's everyday ability to function, which is why it is important for senior citizens to do everything they can to keep their memory sharp. Additionally, seniors should make sure a life insurance policy is in place for the financial security of their loved ones and dependents, as there is no guaranteed way to prevent memory-related maladies such as Alzheimer's disease.
