12/06/11

New research conducted by the University of Washington and Kaiser Permanente reveals that depression in patients with diabetes could lead to an increased risk of dementia.

Th study is among the first and is the largest to date on the topic and appears in the current online issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. Dr. Wayne Katon, lead author of the study, said patients with type 2 diabetes who also suffer from depression experienced a doubling in their risk of dementia during the 3 to 5 years following initial screening.

"Prior research has shown that both depression and diabetes are risk factors for dementia," said Rachel Whitmer, Kaiser Permanente researcher. "This study suggests that having both of these illnesses occurring together is associated with an even greater risk."

Dementia is a serious condition that typically affects individuals as they grow older. It can lead to other mental health issues that could impact the longevity of any individual.
