New research released on physician notifications and postfracture patient care

12/22/11

A new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reveals a simple physician notification system can go a long way in preventing future fractures among osteoporotic patients who have already experienced a fracture.

Researchers from the University of Manitoba and Manitoba Health conducted a controlled trial of 4,264 people age 50 or older who had a major fracture to determine if subsequent physician notifications would lead to better after care.

"The low rates of postfracture intervention in the group receiving usual care, particularly among men, highlight the scale of the gap in care," wrote Dr. William Leslie, University of Manitoba, with coauthors. "This strategy is suitable for implementation on a population level and in areas where population density would not easily support a case-management strategy, providing that high-quality administrative data are available."

Senior citizens are typically more susceptible to fractures and repeat fractures following treatment, as their bones lack the resilience of younger people's. The elderly and aging baby boomers are encouraged to have a life insurance policy in place before they become afflicted with medical conditions that can make it difficult to find affordable quality coverage.
