New research on spinal degeneration

12/16/11

Researchers from The University of Western Ontario recently studied spinal degeneration to better understand what is happening in the brain when the condition occurs.

Spinal degeneration is a natural part of aging and for some it can lead to compression of the spinal cord, which can cause issues with dexterity, numbness of the hands, the ability to walk and bladder and bowel function.

"When patients undergo surgery for spinal cord compression, some improve, some stay static and some continue to get worse," said Dr. Neil Duggal, researcher. "We're looking not only at the mechanisms of the spinal cord, but also, what's happening in the brain and how it responds to injury in the spinal cord, and whether there is any plasticity or ability in the brain to compensate for injury."

The study involved 11 healthy controls and 24 patients with reversible spinal cord compression. The researchers found that patients suffering from spinal cord compression exhibit about a 15 percent decrease in the ratio of amino acid N-acetylaspartate to creatine in the brain. They are conducting further research to determine the significance of this discovery. The findings were published in the journal Brain.

As with many medical conditions, spinal degeneration is common among the elderly and those approaching senior citizen status. Baby boomers and senior citizens alike should have a life insurance policy in place, especially if they have dependents and loved ones who rely on their financial contributions. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective way to find the best rate possible.
