New research links diet to brain shrinkage

12/29/11

Researchers at Oregon State University recently found new evidence that suggests diet and nutrient levels are linked to cognitive ability and brain shrinkage.

Conducted by scientists from the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, in conjunction with the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, the research found that elderly people with higher levels of certain vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids in their blood have a better mental capacity and less brain shrinkage than their peers lacking these vitamins and acids.

"The vitamins and nutrients you get from eating a wide range of fruits, vegetables and fish can be measured in blood biomarkers," said Maret Traber, a principal investigator with the Linus Pauling Institute and co-author of the study. "I'm a firm believer these nutrients have strong potential to protect your brain and make it work better."

Mental disabilities and other cognitive impairments are common among senior citizens, which why it is important baby boomers and those on the verge of old age are financially prepared with a life insurance policy. The right coverage will financially protect a policyholder's dependents and loved ones should unforeseen circumstances arise.
