New research links bilingualism to delaying onset of Alzheimer's

10/14/11

According to researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, people who can speak more than one language have a stronger chance of delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease than unilingual people.

The team of researchers found that bilingual people have twice as much brain damage as unilingual people before they show symptoms of Alzheimer's, which is the first physical evidence that speaking more than one language can delay the onset of the disease.

"This is unheard of - no medicine comes close to delaying the onset of symptoms and now we have the evidence to prove this at the neuroanatomical level," said Dr. Tom Schweizer, a neuroscientist who headed the research.

Dr. Schweizer added the constant brain activity in bilingual people contributes to overall brain health and is the reason why doctors encourage unilingual people to keep their brain active by taking up Sudoku or crossword puzzles.

Getting older typically comes with growing health issues, but that doesn't mean a senior citizen with a health ailment or two should be denied life insurance coverage. Term life insurance policies are a good option for seniors because they usually don't require a medical check-up in order to be approved for coverage.
