New research links Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases

12/14/11

A new test for Alzheimer's disease may predict cognitive decline related to Parkinson's disease, a new study finds.

Conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the study revealed that a method of classifying brain atrophy patterns in Alzheimer's patients by using MRIs can also detect cognitive decline in Parkinson's patients.

"On the basis of a simple neuroimaging study, we can now predict which patients with Parkinson's disease will experience long-term cognitive decline or develop dementia in the future," said Daniel Weintraub, the study's lead author. "Diagnostic tests like this can help us determine which patients would benefit from future clinical trials of medications aiming to stave off or prevent dementia progression in Parkinson's disease."

Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease are two medical issues that can lead to serious health consequences for those who suffer from them. When it comes to life insurance and financial security, it is strongly recommended that consumers secure a policy before debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's have the opportunity to take effect.
