New research could lead to slowing human aging

11/04/11

The fountain of youth may not have been in found in Florida by famed explorer Juan Ponce de Leon after all, as new research suggests the fruit fly may be responsible for slowing human aging and even fighting disease.

Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and collaborators found that altering the PGC-1 gene, also found in humans, in the intestinal stem cells of fruit flies delayed the aging of their intestines and prolonged their lifespans by as much as 50 percent.

"Fruit flies and humans have a lot more in common than most people think," said Leanne Jones, an associate professor in Salk's Laboratory of Genetics and a lead scientist on the project. "There is a tremendous amount of similarity between a human small intestine and the fruit fly intestine."

Although this research is still in preliminary stages and may not directly lead to a magical drug that halts the aging process completely, it should provide many with a reminder that life is short and should be enjoyed. In addition, the financial situation of one's surviving family should also be of the utmost importance. The right life insurance policy can go a long way in making that happen.
