New research could lead to prevention of some age-related disorders

11/04/11

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, have discovered a new tactic that could delay certain age-related disorders.

Their research - carried out on mice and recently published in the journal Nature - has shown that eliminating cells that multiply with age could delay or even prevent the onset of dementia, stroke, cancer and other age-related health ailments.

"Our discovery demonstrates that in our body cells are accumulating that cause these age-related disorders and discomforts," said lead study author Dr. Jan van Deursen, a Mayo Clinic molecular biologist and the Vita Valley Professor of Cellular Senescence. "Therapeutic interventions to get rid of senescent cells or block their effects may represent an avenue to make us feel more vital, healthier, and allow us to stay independent for a much longer time."

This is promising news for baby boomers and senior citizens alike who are worried about their health as they age. Those who have dependents and financially reliant loved ones will need to consider purchasing life insurance coverage of some kind. The right policy will take care of all life's expenses in the event something unforeseen happens to the policyholder.
