New partnership to benefit Alzheimer's research

12/30/11

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, in conjunction with the Gladstone Institutes, recently announced the formation of a discovery-based research partnership that will aim to identify and validate new revelations related to Alzheimer's disease.

The agreement entails Bristol-Myers Squibb funding the research efforts of the Gladstone Institute in identifying targets that affect Tau dysfunction. A protein that binds a cell's internal skeleton and may help regulate brain cell activity, Tau plays a pivotal role in Alzheimer's disease.

"By leveraging the cutting edge expertise of the Gladstone Institutes in Alzheimer's disease we are hoping that the scientific innovation in drug development that often happens at the crossroads of different disciplines will lead to a better understanding of the role of Tau in Alzheimer's disease and, potentially, lead to the identification of new therapies for the treatment of this serious disease," said Francis Cuss, senior vice president of Discovery.

Alzheimer's disease is common among the elderly, with symptoms sometimes making themselves known at an earlier age. An individual's health condition can play a role in how much he or she pays for life insurance coverage, which is why it is important for those with dependents to obtain a policy while they are still in relatively good health. Comparing life insurance quotes online is recommended for those looking to pay the least for the most amount of coverage.
