Researchers at the University of Houston have discovered a new strategy that can be used to effectively treat Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other serious health issues that affect senior citizens.
A review recently published in the October issue of Nature Reviews Drug Discovery revealed the strategy to develop new drugs to battle these conditions. Scientists at the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling at the university outlined the results of their research and 1996 discovery of the estrogen receptor beta.
"We have known for some time that female sex hormones - estrogens - influence a number of functions in the human body," said Dr. Jan-Åke Gustafsson, UH professor and CNRCS director. "Only recently have we and others found that one of the estrogen receptors – ERβ – is a potential target for the treatment of Alzheimer's and other chronic diseases."
These new drug strategies could improve the treatment many older individuals require in battling serious diseases. As they grow older, senior citizens need to think about the financial future of not only themselves but their family members as well. Comparing life insurance quotes online is an effective way for individuals of all ages to secure affordable coverage.
