Mayo Clinic discovery on aging makes Top 10 list

A discovery at the Mayo Clinic on eliminating the effects of aging made the journal Science's Top 10 Achievements list for 2011.

The editors of the journal recognized Mayo Clinic as contributing to the top 10 "groundbreaking scientific achievements" of the year by showing that the onset of age-related disorders and disabilities could be delayed or prevented entirely with the elimination of senescent cells, or cells that have become stagnant and are no longer dividing.

"Our discovery demonstrates that, in our body, cells are accumulating that cause these age-related disorders and discomforts," said Jan van Deursen, the Vita Valley Professor of Cellular Senescence at Mayo Clinic. "Therapeutic interventions to get rid of senescent cells or block their effects may represent an avenue to make us feel more vital, healthier, and allow us to stay independent for a much longer time."

Eliminating the effects of aging and the medical issues that go with aging would be a significant contribution to the medical community, with a huge impact on quality of life for all people.
