Many seniors choose to remain active despite warnings during heat wave

07/25/11

A recent article published by the Associated Press highlights the health risks of the current heat wave that's hitting much of the United States.

Older persons are especially at risk for heat stroke and other health problems during extended periods of heat. Older bodies don't hold nearly as much water as younger ones, and they aren't as good at recognizing temperature changes and letting a person know when it's time to drink some fluids.

According to the source, up to 1,000 Americans lose their lives each year to sweltering summer heat. A federal study found that 40 percent of deaths related to heat were people 65 years old and up.

Several studies have shown that people 65 and older often don't heed heat warnings aimed at seniors because they don't view themselves as old. For example, Scott Sheridan, who studies health and the effects of heat and climate at Kent State University, interviewed more than 900 people in 2006. His study showed that roughly 70 percent were aware of advice to increase fluid intake and avoid outdoor activities on especially hot days, but only half actually followed the advice.

Seniors who insist on remaining active even during blazing heat waves should ensure that they have a good life insurance policy to protect their families and loved ones. According to the Life Insurance Marketing and research Association, thirty percent of U.S. households lack life insurance policies.
