Holiday tips for caregivers courtesy of AARP

12/14/11

With more than 65 million caregivers providing the equivalent of $450 billion in care to their adult parents and other loved ones in 2009, AARP recently released a list of helpful tips regarding caregiving around the holidays.

AARP urged the nation's caregivers to seek outside help when needed, get into the holiday spirit by helping the family member being cared for pick out Christmas ornaments, and set personal time aside.

"Caregiving is a job that doesn't allow for time off during the holidays," said Heather Heppner, associate state director with AARP Illinois. "But caregivers can catch a break during the holidays if they receive the gift of help from others this holiday season."

AARP also urged caregivers to enlist the services of other friends and family to take care of certain tasks, to save the caregiver time and allow for higher quality care in the long run

Although it may not be the most festive topic, the caregiver may wish to bring up life insurance coverage with the person being cared for. The right life insurance policy may include coverage for funeral arrangements, rough annual expenses of the policyholder's dependents and even college tuition payments for any child dependents.
