Heart attack research sheds new light on preventing further attacks

12/08/11

Research from Sweden's Lund University reveals information on how heart attack sufferers can prevent a second occurrence.

Working in conjunction with the United States' Temple University, Lund University's Diabetes Centre studied the effects IRT-1 and AIF-1 cell regrowth have on patients by performing experiments on animals. Increased levels of IRT-1 are associated with less dangerous vascular plaque buildup, reducing the risk of cardiac events.

"The interesting thing is that both proteins are formed from the same gene and we have now found a mechanism to control the balance in the formation of the two," said Maria Gomez, researcher. "Using a new drug we can thus increase the amount of the ‘good’ protein, IRT-1. It is not an approved drug, but it has been tested on mice and appears to be tolerated well."

Suffering a heart attack can be a harrowing experience for those from any age group, but it can especially be traumatic for senior citizens who are worried about deteriorating overall health. Individuals who are approaching senior citizenship status may want to consider a life insurance policy to protect against an uncertain future. The right policy can cover funeral expenses of the policyholder, rough annual living expenses for the dependents listed and even college tuition costs for any children listed in the policy.
