Senior citizens in Georgia could benefit from a Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program initiative that would ensure they stay warm this winter.
Starting November 1, homebound residents and senior citizens in the Peach State can apply for federal assistance funds through LIHEAP, which is designed to help reduce monthly heating costs by providing benefits to residents with low and fixed incomes.
"These funds are obtainable for a home's primary heating energy source, such as natural gas, electric, propane or fuel oil," said Steve Lindsey, vice president of Atlanta Gas Light. "Residents are encouraged to apply now before the temperatures begin to drop."
To be eligible for the program, families must display an income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. More than 250,000 households received funds through the program last year, according to the Georgia Department of Social Services.
Staying warm and promoting increased circulation are effective ways for elderly individuals to stay healthy in cold weather months. Maintaining good health is also important for senior citizens looking to obtain low cost life insurance coverage. Seniors with dependents should compare life insurance quotes online to find the right policy.
