Dogscouts cater to senior citizens with pets

11/29/11

Dogscouts of America is revving up for its second annual holiday pet food and donation drive, which provides stockings of pet food and toys to seniors who have pets and are in the Meals on Wheels program.

In its first year, Dogscouts of America Troop 208 received enough donations to fill 412 stockings with treats and toys for dogs of senior citizens. This year, the leader of the troop, Karen Reeves, is hoping to double that amount, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Many times seniors share their food with their pet, then they don’t receive the full nutritional value of the meal,” Reeves said to the Sun-Times.“It is their only companion. They are something to look over and take care of, it gives many seniors a feeling of purpose.”

According to the source, the Dogscouts of America also stuff stockings with treats cats would like. The Dogscouts group has increased to 19 members this year.

The Sun-Times reported the Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers put together a list of the seniors who have pets during their regular stops.

The Meals on Wheels program is working to end hunger among seniors, which is a growing problem in the United States. Life insurance and annuities offer ways for people to protect against financial difficulties in later years.
