Hundreds of Detroit-area senior citizens gathered at Cobo Hall last weekend to participate in a lottery, through which winners received money to go toward needed home repairs.
According to The Detroit Free Press, nearly $2.5 million in federal home repair grants was up for grabs with as much as $12,000 available per household for senior citizens struggling to maintain their home and exercise proper maintenance.
"I wish we could guarantee everybody could get home repairs," JoAnn Watson, city councilwoman, told the newspaper. "At least we're giving them some resources."
The Senior Emergency Home Repair Program is offered by the city to help senior citizens live safely. It provides health, safety and emergency-related home repair assistance for low-income home owners aged 65 or older and/or disabled individuals aged 55 and over.
Seniors planning for an unpredictable future will also want to consider a life insurance policy. Depending on a number of factors, affordable and extensive coverage is available for anyone who is looking to care for their loved ones after they've passed on.
