Budget cuts affecting senior citizen programs

The struggling job market is affecting prospective workers of all ages, but a recent congressional hearing in Washington discussed the affects the market is having on senior citizens struggling to make ends meet.

Although federally funded programs such as the Senior Community Service Employment Program function to provide employment opportunities to the elderly across the country, the program is facing significant budget cuts for this fiscal year with 45 percent less funding projected.

In response, The Gerontological Society of America has organized the first-ever "Take Action Week" to address the issue.

"Take Action Week will allow our best and brightest researchers, educators, and practitioners to highlight the importance of their work to improve the quality of life for persons as they age," said Greg O'Neill, director of GSA's policy institute, the National Academy on an Aging Society. "The challenges and opportunities presented by America's growing senior population must have a prominent spot on the national agenda."
