Aging committee celebrates 50 years of existence

The U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging is celebrating 50 years of operations and, according to a recently released report, will fulfill an increasingly important function as America's population of senior citizens grows in the coming years.

The Public Policy and Aging Report suggests there will be a greater need for services and programs for senior citizens as the baby boomer generation approaches senior status.

"Major population changes are now underway or accelerating, changes that are taking place within the older population but across the life-span as well, involving individuals of all ages," said Robert Hudson, editor of the PPAR and chair of the Boston University School of Social Work's Department of Social Policy.

There are a number of events, services and programs designed to benefit senior citizens offered by state, local and federal agencies. It's important to promote well-being and longevity among the nation's elderly. It's equally important for the elderly to consider their finances and the finances of their dependents and loved ones.
