Age-related macular degeneration undergoing side effect studies

10/25/11

Age-related macular degeneration recently underwent two major drug trials to determine whether there were possible risks associated with taking the drug.

Although those trials concluded there was little risk involved, the work of an ophthalmologist at the Mayo Clinic, Sophie Bakri, discovered an increase in pressure inside the eye of some of her patients after taking the drug, signaling a possible side effect.

Bakri's findings from a retrospective study will be presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Orlando, Florida.

"I was treating patients and measuring pressures, and I was surprised to see that in some of these people, their intraocular pressure was higher, and they didn't have a diagnosis of glaucoma," Sophie Bakri said. "So, why did the pressure go up? Was it from the drug itself, or the actual injection? Is this real? You don't know if it's a fluke unless you go back and look at the clinical trials."

Although age-related macular degeneration may not be as serious or life threatening as other health issues plaguing senior citizens, it is still a health concern that should be taken seriously especially if the person is in the market for life insurance. Choosing the right policy is important for the elderly because securing finances for their loved ones and dependents is necessary in many situations.
