Weight loss surgery may not help save lives

06/21/11

Older men who undergo bariatric surgery may not have a lower risk of death, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Those individuals who are severely obese and choose to have gastric bypass surgery or gastric banding may still need to invest money into a life insurance policy.

Doctors were curious about whether or not these surgeries were directly linked to reduced mortality in older men. After reviewing more than 850 cases, they discovered that 11 individuals who had surgery died within 30 days and 6.8 percent of patients passed away after six years.

Researchers found that studies claiming bariatric surgery was beneficial in improving patient’s lifespan did not have enough clinical information. People who underwent the surgery had similar survival rates to those who did not.

However, scientists did find that although the risk of death may not improve, many individuals still choose to have the surgery for the related health benefits. After bariatric surgery is completed, patients may experience significant weight loss and fewer co-existing illnesses. Many patients also feel their quality of life is improved after surgery.
