Top fitness trends of 2012 predicted

12/30/11

With many American making their usual New Year's resolutions to become healthier, the Health & Fitness Journal recently released a list of the top fitness trends predicted to be popular in 2012.

The data used to conduct the study was compiled by the American College of Sports Medicine. Around 2,620 fitness professionals worldwide were presented a list of trends for the coming year, and ranked each on a scale of 1 to 20.

"The survey attempts to show a distinction between fads and trends and is a good representation of what's occurring in the health and fitness industry worldwide," said Walter Thompson, Ph.D., the lead author of the survey and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Ranked No. 1 on the list for the fifth year in a row were fitness professionals. The demand for trainers is high and expected to increase drastically over the next half-decade. Strength training was ranked No. 2 and fitness programs for older adults claimed the No. 3 spot.

Also on the list were core training, personal training, ZUMBA and other dance workouts and yoga. Getting in shape is a worthy resolution, given that only about 5 percent of American adults engage in vigorous activity on a daily basis, according to a 2010 study. Another good resolution for individuals thinking about the future is investing in a life insurance policy, which will provide financial protection for dependents and other beneficiaries should unforeseen circumstances arise.
