Survey sheds light on Gen Y's attitudes toward employer-offered benefits

11/01/11

A recent nationwide survey commissioned by Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company and conducted online reveals that members of Generation Y are more likely than their older counterparts to rely on friends and family for benefits information.

The Harris Interactive survey registered responses from more than 1,100 full or part-time adult employees on their needs and preferences related to benefits and found that more than half of those enrolled in insurance plans say a boss or co-worker is their primary source of benefits information.

"While we expected the workplace to be the primary source of benefits information for employees, we were surprised to learn that Gen Y workers rely more on family and friends for this information than their older colleagues do," said Stephen Bygott, assistant vice president, marketing analysis and programs, for Colonial Life.

Not all employers offer life insurance coverage through a benefits package but that shouldn't dissuade a consumer in need from purchasing one. It's recommended potential life insurance buyers ask their employer about coverage first before they compare quotes online from companies and pick out the appropriate policy at the right price.
