Whether an individual is a single person enjoying the fun of living independently, or they are a single parent raising a child on their own, life insurance is not something to be taken lightly, but for very different reasons.
Single people may think that since no one depends on them to survive they do not need to spend money on a life insurance policy they could put into a savings account or annuity. While an annuity is a great way to start planning for retirement, if a single person dies, someone they care about is undoubtedly going to be left with funeral expenses and other unforeseen costs.
Also, if a single person is taking care of an older loved one, a life insurance policy can continue to help support that person if the caretaker passes unexpectedly.
For single parents the issue becomes much more complex. If a parent dies and leaves the child with no financial support it is unclear what may happen to them. If they are lucky they will have loved ones to support them, but most parents would sleep better at night knowing that if anything were to happen, their child would be financially secure.
