Signs of stroke-related dementia

01/25/12

According to the National Stroke Association, vascular dementia is the second-leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, which makes knowing the warning signs of stroke-related dementia a necessity for Americans.

Twenty percent of stroke survivors will develop cognitive problems later in life, including vascular dementia, which is resulting in experts being more vigilant in their efforts to prevent strokes.

Some of the major risk factors for stroke-related dementia are aging, hardening of the arteries and a previous history of stroke, according to Dr. John Volpi, stroke neurologist with the Methodist Neurological Institute in Houston.

Ways to prevent strokes are controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels through diet, exercise and medication. Also, discontinuing smoking habits, which might also cause other health problems, including cancers, and managing diabetes through lifestyle changes and medication.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, 14.9 million families and friends provided 17 billion hours of unpaid car to those with Alzheimer's in 2010, which might encourage some Americans to invest in life insurance to ensure dependents and loved ones are provided for, given an uncertain future.
