Secondhand smoke may lead to heart problems

11/30/11

A new study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that being around a smoker may be detrimental to the physical well-being of a person with chronic heart failure.

The study, which was led by Dr. Kirsten Fleischmann of the University of California in San Francisco, found that the 205 non-smokers with heart failure involved reported more problems carrying out daily functions after they breathed in secondhand smoke regularly.

"In my opinion, patients with heart failure should definitely avoid secondhand smoke exposure - both to minimize the risk of cardiac events such as heart attacks and because of the effects on health-related quality of life that we documented," Fleischmann told Reuters Health in an email.

A large number of studies conducted in the past found that non-smokers who regularly breathe in smoke from other people have a higher risk of developing heart disease.

Fleischmann stated that it's possible secondhand smoke could worsen the condition of a person with chronic heart failure by impairing blood-vessel functions or increasing inflammation in blood vessels.

With heart disease being the leading cause of death in the United States, life insurance might be looked into by Americans who read this study.
