Researchers explore different dementia treatments

02/21/12

Researchers recently published a comprehensive study that called for alternative therapies to be explored to treat dementia patients.

A team at the Universities of Hull and Maastricht brought a pressing issue to the forefront, calling for research into the alternative treatment, known as functional or behavioral analysis, which the government recommends.

The researchers argue that alternative therapies should be researched and applied more consistently if they are able to give caregivers and patients an easier road to recovery and reduce the number of antipsychotic drugs prescribed.

"Since our study has shown that functional analytic-based interventions for behaviors that challenge others have strong promise in dementia care, large-scale clinical trials are needed," said Esme Moniz-Cook, honorary professor at the University of Hull. "These should be designed and supervised by professionally trained staff in both family care and care home settings. Improved knowledge and training on functional analysis as an approach to treatment is also required if the systematic approach to detecting and addressing the causes of distress in people with dementia and their carers is to be achieved."

The National Institute of Health estimates that about 3.4 million Americans aged 71 years and older have dementia, which might encourage some to secure a life insurance policy.
